Music Format History

The Vinyl Record, first became a mainstream music format in the 50's/60's and are still popular today
The Reel to Reel player first became popular in the 1940's and were the primary way most music was recorded until the 1980's
8 Tracks- the inferior version of cassette tapes were first invented in 1954, were put in ford sports/luxery cars in 1965 and were finally replaced by cassettes in the mid-80's.
Cassette tapes were first invented in 1962 by a Dutch Engineer named: Lou Ottens and were popular in the 80's/90's.
CD's were first invented in 1982, but were too expensive of a format to truly take off, CD's became mainstream in the 90's and are still made today.
Minidisc were a long lived format that were invented in 1992 and lasted/manufactured until 2013. Long live the Minidisc!
The first music steaming service: "Napster" launched in 1999
iPods were a revolution in portable music and quickly took over the world with the first iPod releasing in 2001, with many interations released afterwards, the final iPod touch model' was released on May 22nd, 2022.
Though sites like Napster were popular in the 2000's, music streaming services had evolved and taken a major role in the mainstream by the 2010's and in March 2012, streaming services were added to the Hot 100 chart.
